How can you tell if a lip gloss has been used?

I recently purchased a philosophy lip gloss from sephora, one of the ones that's near the front when you buy all your stuff. it wasn't packaged and the top is sticky when you open it up. has it been used? how can you tell? How can you tell if a lip gloss has been used?
Usually when you buy one that is sticky or smooshed when you open it,it has been used.

It's not a really big problem. You could just swipe it down with alcohol and use it and be fine.

But,since you paid full price and ended up with used merchandise,I recommend you call the store's customer service hotline, and explain your situation. The company/store might be nice enough to send you some coupons to save money off your next purchase. How can you tell if a lip gloss has been used?
it's probably been used if there's gloss on the top. 3 million testers and there's people who gotta be gross! as long as you have the receipt sephora is pretty good for returns. what kind of applicator is it? the squeeze tube with the pointed tip that toches your lips? (most of the philosophy glosses I've seen are like this, but then again I don't own any) I would just use a little alcohol pad and wipe it down, anything that touches the lips then back in the container would definitely be worth the drive back.
If there is no packaging on it and the top is sticky, there is a very good chance that it has been used. You should return it just to be on the safe side, and make sure the one you exchange it for is sealed!
no package, broken seal, lipgloss on the sides or when u open it up, it sticks... yuckyy yuckyy! hehe..
